The fractal company
good companies are sort of fractals
A fractal is a geometric shape with an attractive property: it is constructed by applying some pattern recursively. In nature it is pretty common, for instance, broccoli and cauliflower are a sort of fractal.
I guess, also good companies are sort of fractals or, at least, should be. Take a look at the diagram.
Any business is based on three figures:
- The entrepreneur: they make it up
- The specialist: they make it real
- The manager: they make it recur
From the company perspective, the three figures are played by some executive roles. The same should be true if we move the analysis among the various sub-structure of a company. They could be divisions, market lines, business divisions, teams.
In other ways, from every perspective, the fractal must be clearly visible. The best is when also any single employee can act as an entrepreneur, a specialist, and a manager.
